When teaching massage therapy, I emphasize the importance of incorporating full-body movement into your practice. It’s essential to think of it as a dance, you need to move with your body while massaging to prevent injuries to yourself, especially your hands and wrists. Many students underestimate how crucial body mechanics are, especially when you’re seeing 6 to 9 clients a day. Without proper techniques and movement, repetitive strain can lead to long-term injuries.
As massage therapists, we’re also affected by the energy of our clients. It’s possible to absorb their energy, and in some cases, even feel their physical discomfort within our own bodies. This energy can linger for days or even weeks if we’re not mindful. That’s why it’s vital to not only focus on proper techniques but also to remain aware of how you’re managing and releasing the energy you encounter during each session. By taking care of yourself and using correct techniques, you can sustain a healthy and rewarding career in massage therapy.
